Withdrawal of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) presents significant ethical and moral challenges for ITU nurses.
Limited existing literature addresses ECMO withdrawal from medical or nursing viewpoints.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the experiences of nurses involved in the withdrawal of ECMO from adult patients.
To identify themes related to decision-making processes during ECMO withdrawal.

Main Methods:

A grounded theory study was conducted.
Focus was on nurses' experiences with ECMO withdrawal in adult patients.

Main Results:

Three major themes emerged: justification for treatment withdrawal, the nurse's role in decision-making, and the involvement of others.
The core category identified was 'facilitating the decision-making process'.

Conclusions:

Recommendations include formal meetings and debriefing for nurses.
Further research is suggested on 'corporeal anxiety' and family involvement in decision-making for ECMO withdrawal.
