  • Public Health
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Nicotine dependence is highly prevalent in individuals with alcohol or substance use disorders.
  • Many patients in substance abuse treatment programs desire to quit smoking.
  • Smoking cessation has historically been overlooked in clinical interventions for this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review recent evidence on smoking cessation in individuals with substance use disorders.
  • To examine the relationship between tobacco abstinence and relapse to other substances.
  • To highlight the importance of integrating smoking cessation into addiction treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical trial evidence concerning smoking cessation in individuals with alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, or opioid abuse.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of success rates and relapse patterns associated with tobacco abstinence.
  • Examination of the interplay between nicotine and other substance use.
  • Main Results:

    • Smokers with prior alcohol dependence history show similar cessation success rates as non-alcoholic smokers.
    • Tobacco abstinence does not elevate the risk of alcohol relapse.
    • Continued smoking negatively impacts marijuana dependence treatment outcomes.
    • Cocaine and nicotine use patterns are interconnected.
    • Smoking cessation rates are significantly lower in opioid-dependent individuals compared to the general population.

    Conclusions:

    • Smoking cessation is recommended for individuals recovering from substance dependence.
    • Quitting smoking may offer protection against relapse to the primary drug of abuse.
    • Integrating smoking cessation interventions is vital for comprehensive addiction treatment.
