An unusual case of an ectopic third molar in the condylar process, associated with an odontogenic cyst, was reported. Surgical removal of the tooth and cyst resolved symptoms and prevented further bone complications.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Ectopic eruption of third molars is common, but displacement into the condylar region is rare.
  • Odontogenic cysts can occur in association with impacted or ectopic teeth.

Observation:

  • A case of an ectopic inferior third molar located within the condylar process of the mandible is presented.
  • The ectopic tooth was associated with an odontogenic cyst, causing infective and articular symptoms.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention involving the removal of both the ectopic third molar and the associated odontogenic cyst was recommended.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the nature of the cyst and its relationship with the tooth.

Implications:
