Observation:

  • A prospective study monitored 27 children with idiopathic epilepsy treated with zonisamide monotherapy for two years.
  • Behavioral disturbances were observed in two cases (7.4%) despite excellent seizure control.

Findings:

  • Two adolescent girls developed behavioral issues including selective mutism, violent behavior, lack of concentration, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • These adverse effects emerged years after initiating zonisamide and resolved upon dosage reduction, without compromising seizure control.
