This study found an independent link between serum leptin and uric acid levels in Japanese women. Elevated uric acid is associated with metabolic Syndrome X components, with leptin playing a significant role.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Metabolic Health
- Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors
Background:
- Serum uric acid is a predictor of cardiovascular disease death, particularly in women.
- Elevated serum leptin, the ob gene product, is implicated in metabolic Syndrome X.
- Metabolic Syndrome X is characterized by insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid and serum leptin levels.
- To examine the association of uric acid with components of metabolic Syndrome X in Japanese women.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study of 822 Japanese women.
- Analysis of serum uric acid levels categorized into tertiles.
- Statistical analysis including ANOVA and stepwise regression to assess relationships between variables.
Main Results:
- Higher uric acid levels correlated with increased body mass index, body fat mass, blood pressure, triglycerides, insulin resistance (HOMA-R), and leptin.
- Lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was observed with higher uric acid levels.
- Serum leptin remained significantly elevated in hyperuricemic women after adjusting for BMI and body fat mass, and was an independent predictor of uric acid levels.
Conclusions:
- There is an independent relationship between serum leptin and serum uric acid.
- Leptin's involvement in metabolic Syndrome X is further supported by its association with uric acid.
- These findings highlight potential therapeutic targets for managing metabolic and cardiovascular risks.
