Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Limited data exists on visual impairment in chronic psychiatric patients.
  • This pilot study addresses the need for systematically collected data.
  • Focuses on institutionalized psychiatric patients in Hong Kong.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the prevalence of impaired distant visual acuity (DVA).
  • To identify causes of DVA impairment, including refractive and non-refractive errors.
  • To assess visual correction needs in institutionalized psychiatric patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 428 institutionalized psychiatric patients was randomly selected.
  • Distant visual acuity (DVA) was assessed using the Snellen method.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The pinhole method differentiated refractive from non-refractive DVA impairment.
  • Main Results:

    • 75% of patients exhibited impaired DVA.
    • 39% had refractive errors, primarily myopia.
    • Few patients wore spectacles, and many had uncorrected vision.
    • Impaired DVA was associated with older age.

    Conclusions:

    • Myopia prevalence is similar to the general population.
    • Non-refractive visual impairment requires further investigation.
    • Systematic eye examinations, medication, and lifestyle factors are crucial.
    • Regular eye assessments should be integrated into patient care.
