    Summary

This study compared rheumatic valvular disease cases from two periods. Later cases showed older patients, more thromboembolic issues, and less rheumatic activity, but significant rheumatic activity persisted in middle-aged individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Rheumatic valvular disease remains a significant global health concern.
    • Understanding temporal trends in its presentation is crucial for public health strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze changes in the characteristics of patients with rheumatic valvular disease over two distinct time periods.
    • To identify shifts in age, complications, and disease activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of post-mortem data from two periods: 1961-1967 and 1968-1973.
    • Comparison of demographic data, clinical complications, and pathological findings between the two groups.

    Main Results:

    • The later period (1968-1973) showed an increase in the average age of deceased individuals by one decade.
    • Thromboembolic complications and chronic cardiac insufficiency were more prevalent in the later period.
    • Rheumatic activity decreased in the later period but remained considerable in the fourth and fifth decades of life.
    • No significant differences in sex distribution or specific valvular lesions were observed between the groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Rheumatic valvular disease presentation evolved, with older patients and increased complications in the later study period.
    • Despite an overall decrease, rheumatic activity persisted in middle-aged populations, indicating ongoing disease burden.
