Epithelial-nerve intermingling in benign breast lesions.

    Summary

    Benign epithelial cells can intermingle with nerves in breast tissue, a phenomenon not exclusive to cancer. This finding suggests "epithelial-nerve intermingling" is not always a sign of malignancy.

    Background:

    • Perineural invasion is a known pathway for malignant cell spread.
    • The concept of "perineural-lymphatics" is increasingly debated in recent research.

    Observation:

    • Two breast tissue specimens showed intimate intermingling of benign ductal epithelium and nerves.
    • These ducts were located within the breast tissue, not within lymphatic channels.

    Findings:

    • The observed phenomenon is termed "epithelial-nerve intermingling."
    • While common in carcinoma, benign epithelium can also participate in this intermingling.
    • This intermingling does not necessarily indicate malignant neoplasia.

    Implications:

    • "Epithelial-nerve intermingling" should not be a sole criterion for diagnosing malignancy.
    • It should not be used to determine the extent of known malignant neoplasms unless epithelial cells are clearly atypical.
