    Summary

    Aflatoxin in chickens causes hemolytic anemia, reducing red blood cells and affecting bone marrow. It increases white blood cells and nucleic acids, particularly at doses that inhibit growth.

    Background:

    • Aflatoxins are toxic metabolites produced by fungi.
    • Dietary aflatoxin exposure can impact animal health and productivity.
    • Previous studies suggested general inhibition of nucleic acid and protein synthesis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the hematological and bone marrow effects of graded dietary aflatoxin doses in chickens.
    • To determine if aflatoxin induces hemolytic or hemorrhagic anemia.
    • To assess aflatoxin's impact on nucleic acid and protein synthesis in chickens.

    Main Methods:

    • Chickens were administered varying dietary concentrations of aflatoxin (0 to 10.0 mug./g).
    • Hematological parameters (hemoglobin, packed cell volume, erythrocyte count, leukocyte counts) were measured.
    • Bone marrow lipid and nucleic acid content were analyzed, alongside differential leukocyte counts.

    Main Results:

    • Aflatoxin significantly reduced hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and erythrocyte counts, indicating hemolytic anemia.
    • Bone marrow exhibited hyperplasia, decreased lipid content, and increased ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
    • Total leukocytes increased, with elevated heterophils and decreased basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.

    Conclusions:

    • Aflatoxin induces hemolytic anemia in chickens.
    • Aflatoxin is not implicated in the hemorrhagic anemia syndrome in chickens.
    • Contrary to rat studies, aflatoxin does not broadly inhibit RNA and protein synthesis in chickens.
