Abstract:
A total of 169 people are known to be suffering from HIV in Yemen, the al-Thawra newspaper reported. It quoted Abdul al-Razak al-Somali, director of the National Program for Fighting AIDS, as saying six new cases have been discovered in 1996, bringing known cases to 169. Most sufferers are Yemenis and Ethiopians. Somali said 11 people had so far died of AIDS-related illness in the impoverished Arab state, which has a population of about 16 million.
