    Summary

During mitral commissurotomy, arrhythmias are common but not life-threatening. Esophageal ECG aids diagnosis, and pharmacological treatment is rarely needed.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Cardiac Surgery

    Background:

    • Arrhythmias are a known complication during cardiac surgery.
    • Mitral commissurotomy carries specific risks of cardiac rhythm disturbances.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the types and frequency of arrhythmias during mitral commissurotomy.
    • To evaluate the clinical significance and management of these arrhythmias.

    Main Methods:

    • Detailed analysis of arrhythmias recorded during 110 mitral commissurotomy operations.
    • Utilized electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, including esophageal leads for enhanced diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • All patients developed supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, varying with surgical stage.
    • No life-threatening arrhythmias like ventricular flutter or fibrillation were observed.
    • Ventricular tachycardia during dilation spontaneously resolved upon dilator removal.

    Conclusions:

    • Arrhythmias during mitral commissurotomy are frequent but generally benign.
    • Esophageal ECG provides valuable diagnostic support.
    • Pharmacological intervention is infrequently required.
