New fertility test for men

A new home-based fertility test for men is shortly to be launched in the Netherlands. The test uses a dye which changes color when oxygen falls below a certain level. Vigorous sperm consume oxygen as they swim, so if a milliliter of semen contains more than 20 million highly motile sperm, the sample will turn color. In this situation a couple would have a 90% chance of conceiving within 1 year. As conception problems originate with the man as often as with the woman, the new test may prevent women from having to undergo unnecessary tests.
