Summary

Nearwork induced transient myopia (NITM) is significantly present in progressing myopes compared to stable myopes and emmetropes. This suggests NITM occurs during the progression of myopia.

  • To investigate nearwork induced transient myopia (NITM) in progressing myopes (PMs), stable myopes (SMs), and emmetropes (EMMs).
  • To test the hypothesis that accommodation inaccuracies occur predominantly during myopia progression.

Main Methods:

  • 41 young adults (18-27 years) participated: 13 PMs, 14 SMs, 14 EMMs.
  • Subjects performed a 10-minute near task (4 D).
  • Changes in accommodation response to distance viewing were measured for two minutes post-task.

  • Progressing myopes exhibited a significant nearwork after-effect compared to SMs and EMMs at 10 and 30 seconds post-task (p < 0.01).

  • These findings support the hypothesis that accommodation response inaccuracies are associated with active myopia progression.
