Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Mastectomy often leads to psychosocial distress and body image issues.
  • External prostheses can be inconvenient for patients.
  • Breast reconstruction offers a potential solution to mitigate these negative effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate patient satisfaction after delayed breast reconstruction.
  • To assess the impact of reconstruction on quality of life and body image.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 75 women undergoing delayed breast reconstruction (TRAM flap or latissimus dorsi flap).
  • Data collected at 3 and 6 months postoperatively.
  • Patient satisfaction, expectations, and quality of life indicators were assessed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • High patient satisfaction (overwhelming majority) with reconstruction outcomes.
  • Preoperative expectations were met in 90% of patients.
  • Key benefits included a "new breast of one's own" and alleviation of neck, shoulder, and back pain.

Conclusions:

  • Delayed breast reconstruction is a highly satisfactory option for women experiencing mastectomy-related issues.
  • Reconstruction positively impacts body image and physical discomfort, though recovery can be long.
  • Breast reconstruction should be considered a standard option for all mastectomy patients.
