Summary

General dental practitioners (GDPs) have hypertension knowledge but rarely screen patients. While most GDPs see value in hypertension education, they are hesitant to actively screen patients for high blood pressure.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Practice
  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Hypertension is a significant public health concern.
  • General dental practitioners (GDPs) interact with a large patient population.
  • Assessing GDPs' role in hypertension management is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To survey GDPs' attitudes, knowledge, and practices regarding hypertension in dental patients.
  • To evaluate GDPs' opinions on screening for hypertension.
  • To identify barriers and facilitators for GDP involvement in hypertension care.

Main Methods:

  • A postal survey was conducted among general dental practitioners.
  • A response rate of 69% (207 out of 300) was achieved.
  • The survey assessed training, current practices, and opinions on screening and education.

Main Results:

  • 98% of GDPs reported training in blood pressure measurement.
  • Routine blood pressure measurement was low (4.8%), increasing to 9.2% for hypertensive patients.
  • Only 27.1% supported dentist involvement in screening, but 85.3% valued further education.

Conclusions:

  • GDPs possess hypertension knowledge and training but have limited current screening practices.
  • There is a clear demand for enhanced education on hypertension management for GDPs.
  • GDPs are generally not inclined towards active patient screening for hypertension, preferring educational enhancement.
