Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Cardiovascular Imaging
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Background:

  • Undersampled projection reconstruction (PR) offers imaging efficiency by trading signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or streak artifacts for fewer k-space views.
  • Fourier imaging techniques face tradeoffs between resolution/aliasing and acquired k-space lines.
  • TrueFISP (true fast imaging with steady state precession) is well-suited for undersampled PR due to its high SNR.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of using undersampled 3D PR TrueFISP for breathhold coronary artery imaging.
  • To compare the spatial resolution of PR TrueFISP with Fourier TrueFISP within the same imaging time.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized segmented 3D PR TrueFISP for coronary artery imaging within a 24-heartbeat scheme.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Acquired 93 to 153 views per partition for 3D PR TrueFISP.
  • Conducted phantom studies and preliminary in vivo comparisons.
  • Main Results:

    • Demonstrated improved spatial resolution of PR over Fourier TrueFISP for the same imaging duration.
    • Achieved a 1.0 x 1.0 mm² isotropic in-plane voxel size with 3D PR TrueFISP.
    • Observed streak artifacts in some images, but these did not hinder coronary artery visualization.

    Conclusions:

    • 3D undersampled PR TrueFISP enables isotropic in-plane voxel size acquisition within a single breathhold.
    • This technique shows promise for efficient and high-resolution coronary artery imaging.
    • PR TrueFISP offers an improved approach compared to conventional Fourier methods for cardiac applications.
