Summary

Resting energy expenditure (REE) data from 6498 individuals was collected to calculate energy needs. After age 15, REE/kg stabilized around 29 kcal/kg for both males and females.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Human Physiology
  • Metabolic Research

Background:

  • Resting energy expenditure (REE) is fundamental for determining daily caloric requirements.
  • Accurate REE data is crucial for personalized nutrition and metabolic health assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically measure and analyze Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) across diverse age groups and sexes.
  • To establish reference values for REE and REE per kilogram of body weight.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a portable calorimeter (Metavine) to measure REE in 6498 subjects.
  • Stratified data by age (1-year increments) and sex, ensuring a minimum of 10 subjects per group.
  • Analyzed REE and REE/kg to determine standard deviations and age-related trends.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Established REE values across a wide age range and for both sexes.
  • Observed a standard deviation of 20-25% for REE and REE/kg.
  • Found that REE/kg remained stable after age 15, averaging approximately 29 kcal/kg for males and females.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides essential reference data for REE calculations in various populations.
  • Identified a stable REE/kg threshold in adults, aiding in energy requirement estimations.
  • Highlights the importance of age and sex in understanding metabolic rate variations.
