Summary

Complex brain networks exhibit unintended, simple dynamics that influence how we perceive stimuli. These spurious dynamics, while hard to pinpoint, shape neural processing and sensory perception.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Computational Neuroscience
  • Systems Neuroscience

Background:

  • Cortical networks are complex dynamical systems responsible for information processing.
  • Network complexity, beyond specific details, can lead to unintended dynamical behaviors.
  • Previous observations in models and the somatosensory cortex suggest these spurious dynamics are common.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role and characteristics of unintended dynamical behaviors in cortical networks.
  • To explore how these spurious dynamics influence neural responses to stimuli.
  • To understand their contribution to perception.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of dynamical behaviors in cortical network models.
  • Observation of dynamics in the somatosensory cortex, specifically in response to brushing stimulation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Characterization of emergent dynamical features.
  • Main Results:

    • Spurious dynamical behaviors are likely pervasive but relatively simple in cortical networks.
    • These dynamics contribute to, rather than dominate, network responses to stimuli.
    • Specific examples of spurious dynamics in somatosensory cortex response to brushing were identified.

    Conclusions:

    • Spurious dynamics, arising from network complexity, significantly affect neuronal function and stimulus representation.
    • Their emergent and distributed nature makes pinpointing specific mechanisms challenging.
    • Understanding these dynamics is crucial for explaining features of cortical processing and perception.
