Summary

Contingent negative variation (CNV) offers a simpler, objective method for diagnosing smell disorders like anosmia. Unlike olfactory evoked potentials (OEP), CNV assessment is not affected by breathing, correlating with cognitive odor identification.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Ophthalmology
  • Sensory Science

Background:

  • Objective assessment of olfactory disorders is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
  • Olfactory evoked potentials (OEP) are commonly used but are complex and respiration-dependent.
  • Contingent negative variation (CNV) presents a simpler alternative for diagnosing smell impairments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of CNV as an objective measure for olfactory disorders.
  • To compare CNV with OEP in individuals with and without anosmia.

Main Methods:

  • CNV and OEP were recorded in 25 healthy adults and 16 patients with anosmia.
  • Direct CNV was measured during expected auditory stimuli following odor.
  • Selective CNV was scored using two different odors, with auditory stimuli following only one.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A distinct CNV was observed in most healthy subjects (21/25 direct, 23/25 selective).
  • OEP were absent in 4.3% of controls; no OEP or CNV was detected in anosmia patients.
  • Selective CNV amplitudes were significantly higher than direct CNV amplitudes, with no gender bias.

Conclusions:

  • CNV registration provides a viable method for objective olfactometry.
  • CNV measurement is independent of physical olfactory stimulus parameters.
  • CNV correlates effectively with the cognitive aspect of odor identification, unlike OEP.
