Variability of master gutta-percha cones.

    Summary

Standardized gutta-percha cones used in root canal filling show significant size and taper variability across brands. The current ISO standard allows for excessive variation, impacting dental treatment consistency.

    Area of Science:

    • Endodontics
    • Dental Materials Science

    Background:

    • Root canal filling relies on standardized gutta-percha cones for apical fit.
    • Clinical observations suggest variability in commercially available gutta-percha cone dimensions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the conformity of commercially available gutta-percha cones (sizes 25-35) to the ISO 6877:1995 standard.
    • To determine the extent of dimensional variability among different brands and sizes of gutta-percha cones.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight brands of gutta-percha cones (sizes 25, 30, 35) were analyzed.
    • Cone diameters were measured at 1 mm and 6 mm from the tip.
    • Data were compared against ISO 6877:1995 specifications.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Significant variability in diameter and taper was observed for individual cones within the same size and brand.
  • While mean dimensions showed closer correlation to the ISO standard, many individual cones deviated significantly.
  • All tested brands exhibited considerable variation.
  • Conclusions:

    • The current ISO 6877:1995 standard for dental root canal obturating cones permits excessive dimensional variability.
    • There is a need for improved manufacturing consistency to ensure predictable clinical outcomes in endodontic treatments.
