Summary

Hip revision surgery patients showed a correlation between inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and osteolysis severity. Controlling nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis may help prevent or treat implant loosening.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in aseptic loosening of hip prostheses.
  • To correlate NOS expression with wear debris and osteolysis severity.

  • Tissue samples from 19 hip revision surgery patients were analyzed.
  • Immunohistochemistry was used to detect inducible NOS (iNOS).
  • Quantitative analysis correlated iNOS expression with wear debris and radiological osteolysis.
