    Summary

    This study found that coal miners' exposure to airborne dust is the primary cause of simple pneumoconiosis. Smoking habits do not significantly alter the risk of developing this respiratory disease.

    Background:

    • Pneumoconiosis is a serious respiratory disease affecting coal miners.
    • The influence of smoking on pneumoconiosis development requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the relationship between dust exposure, smoking habits, and the attack rate of simple pneumoconiosis in British coal miners.
    • To determine if smoking modifies the risk of developing pneumoconiosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of attack rates in 2723 British coal miners based on dust exposure and smoking.
    • Complementary analysis using radiological data for prevalence and attack rates in an independent group.

    Main Results:

    • High dust exposure is the main factor for simple pneumoconiosis.
    • An apparent association between smoking and increased risk at high dust exposures was not statistically significant (P not less than 0.09).
    • No evidence supported conflicting tendencies in subgroups based on phlegm production.

    Conclusions:

    • Airborne dust exposure is the primary determinant for simple pneumoconiosis development.
    • Smoking does not appear to significantly modify the risk of developing simple pneumoconiosis in coal miners.
