Schizophrenia is linked to reduced dendritic material in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). This study found fewer dendrites on pyramidal neurons in specific PFC layers, suggesting impaired information processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate dendritic morphology in the medial prefrontal cortex (area 32) of individuals with schizophrenia.
  • To quantify changes in primary and secondary basilar dendrites on pyramidal neurons in layers III and V.

  • Analysis of Golgi-stained brain tissue from 11 individuals with schizophrenia and 11 comparison subjects.
