Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) is a common pediatric complaint.
  • Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the etiological spectrum of recurrent abdominal pain in children.
  • To differentiate between organic and non-organic causes of RAP.

Main Methods:

  • A study was conducted on eighty-five children presenting with recurrent abdominal pain.
  • Etiological factors were systematically investigated to determine organic or non-organic origins.

Main Results:

  • Organic causes were identified in 70 children (82.4%), with Giardiasis being the most frequent (67.0%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Other organic causes included gallstones, urinary infections, esophagitis/gastritis, and abdominal tuberculosis.
  • Non-organic causes were found in 15 children (17.6%), associated with factors like single parenthood, school phobia, and sibling rivalry.
  • Conclusions:

    • Parasitic infections, particularly Giardiasis, are a predominant cause of organic recurrent abdominal pain in children.
    • Psychosocial factors and family history play a significant role in non-organic recurrent abdominal pain.
