Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Context:

  • Salmonellosis remains a significant public health concern globally.
  • Understanding the epidemiology and serotype distribution is crucial for effective control.
  • The year 2000 data provides a snapshot of the salmonellosis burden in the reporting region.

Purpose:

  • To report the incidence and characteristics of salmonellosis cases in 2000.
  • To identify the most prevalent Salmonella serotypes and their associated clinical outcomes.
  • To document newly identified Salmonella serotypes and risk factors for severe disease.

Summary:

  • In 2000, 22,799 salmonellosis cases were reported (59.0/100,000 population), with a seasonal peak in May-June.
  • Salmonella Enteriditis accounted for 91% of cases; seven new serotypes were identified.
  • Children under five had the highest incidence (337.3/100,000); severe manifestations occurred in 87 patients, with 12 deaths.

Impact:

  • Highlights the dominant role of Salmonella Enteriditis in human infections.
  • Identifies vulnerable populations (young children) and risk factors for severe disease.
  • Provides baseline data for monitoring Salmonella trends and informing public health interventions.
