A rare case of spontaneous liver cyst regression in an adult woman is presented. Over 8 years, the cyst significantly reduced in size without any medical intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Simple liver cysts are common, typically asymptomatic, and usually require no treatment.
  • Congenital liver cysts in adults are generally stable or slowly growing.
  • Spontaneous regression of liver cysts is exceedingly rare in adult patients.

Observation:

  • A 55-year-old woman presented with a large simple liver cyst.
  • The cyst's diameter measured 77 mm at the initial assessment.
  • Serial imaging over 8 years documented a progressive decrease in cyst size.

Findings:

  • The liver cyst underwent spontaneous regression, reducing to 10 mm in diameter.
  • No surgical, radiological, or pharmacological interventions were administered.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The observed regression occurred over an 8-year follow-up period.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the possibility of spontaneous regression even in large congenital liver cysts in adults.
    • Further research into the potential mechanisms driving such regression is warranted.
    • Understanding these mechanisms could offer new insights into cyst pathophysiology and management.
