This study tracked voice development in children over 42 months. Findings show vocal maturation and individual differences in fundamental and formant frequencies between ages 6-10.
Area of Science:
- Speech and Hearing Science
- Developmental Pediatrics
- Acoustic Phonetics
Background:
- Previous cross-sectional studies documented fundamental frequency and formant frequency in children aged 6-10 years.
- A cohort of 15 children from prior studies participated in a longitudinal follow-up.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate longitudinal voice development patterns in children.
- To analyze changes in fundamental frequency and formant frequencies over approximately 42 months.
Main Methods:
- Acoustic analysis of recorded speech data from 15 children at two time points (Time 1 and Time 2).
- Comparison of fundamental frequency and the first three formant frequencies for phrase-final vowels.
- Longitudinal analysis examining changes across age and sex.
Main Results:
- Evidence of voice parameter maturation in all subjects between Time 1 and Time 2.
- Observed changes in the majority of parameters across age and sex.
- Identified individual differences in maturational patterns, highlighting developmental variation.
Conclusions:
- Children's voices demonstrate maturation between ages 6-10 over a 42-month period.
- Significant individual variability exists in the developmental trajectory of voice characteristics.
- Acoustic analysis provides insights into normative and individual voice development.
