    Summary

Propranolol significantly improved essential tremor symptoms in all patients treated, particularly in the upper extremities. This study suggests propranolol is the leading medication for essential tremor, with no observed side effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Clinical Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Essential tremor is a common neurological disorder characterized by involuntary rhythmic shaking.
    • Current treatment options for essential tremor offer limited efficacy and potential side effects.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of propranolol in patients with essential tremor.
    • To determine if propranolol is superior to placebo in managing essential tremor symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 11 patients diagnosed with essential tremor.
    • Patients received either 120 mg of propranolol daily or a placebo.
    • Outcomes were assessed through clinical evaluation, the grooved pegboard test, and handwriting analysis by blinded observers.

    Main Results:

    • All patients treated with propranolol demonstrated a noticeable improvement in tremor.
    • The most significant tremor reduction was observed in the upper extremities.
    • Objective measures, including the grooved pegboard test and handwriting quality, corroborated the clinical findings.
    • No adverse side effects were reported during the trial.

    Conclusions:

    • Propranolol is a highly effective and well-tolerated medication for essential tremor.
    • Based on these findings, propranolol is considered the foremost pharmacological treatment for essential tremor.
    • Further research may explore long-term efficacy and optimal dosing strategies.
