Insights
Mesh-plug repair is a safe and effective technique for pediatric femoral hernias (FH). This method demonstrated successful outcomes in four children with FH, with no complications observed during a two-year follow-up.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Surgical Innovation
Background:
- Femoral hernias (FH) are uncommon in children, leading to a lack of established treatment guidelines.
- Mesh-plug repair is increasingly favored for adult femoral hernias.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mesh-plug repair for pediatric femoral hernias.
- To discuss the applicability of this technique in pediatric patients.
Main Methods:
- A case series involving four pediatric patients with femoral hernias.
- Detailed description of the mesh-plug operative technique and patient characteristics.
Main Results:
- Successful application of mesh-plug repair in all four pediatric cases.
- No intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported.
- Follow-up period ranged from 8 to 30 months (mean 2 years).
Conclusions:
- Mesh-plug repair is a straightforward and highly successful surgical option for pediatric femoral hernias.
- This technique offers a viable alternative for managing FH in children.
Purpose:
Femoral hernias (FH) are rarely seen in children, so there is no consensus on the age and sex distribution or the optimum method of repair. Recently, repair of the femoral hernias with mesh-plug has gained wide popularity in adults. The authors used this method in 4 children with FH and discuss its utilization in children.
Methods:
Four consecutive children with femoral hernia were treated using mesh-plug. Patients' characteristics and operative technique was described.
Results:
Plugging femoral defect with a mesh-plug was applied successfully in children. No complications were seen after a follow-up period for 2 years (range, 8 to 30 months).
Conclusion:
Repair of femoral hernias with mesh-plug is performed easily and successfully in children.
