    Summary

Ultrasonic nebulizer anesthesia using Lidocaine provides effective local anesthesia for bronchoscopy in most patients. This method was preferred by patients over conventional techniques and demonstrated safe blood Lidocaine levels.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Anesthesiology

    Background:

    • Bronchoscopy requires effective local anesthesia for patient comfort and procedure success.
    • Conventional anesthesia methods may have limitations or patient-related drawbacks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasonic nebulizer delivery of local anesthesia for bronchoscopy.
    • To compare patient preference for nebulizer anesthesia versus conventional methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized an ultrasonic nebulizer (De Vilbiss 35 A) with 10 ml of 4% Lidocaine without adrenaline.
    • Monitored blood Lidocaine levels in 12 patients.
    • Assessed anesthesia satisfaction in 1,043 patients undergoing bronchoscopy.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Satisfactory anesthesia was achieved in 95% of patients; 5% reported incomplete laryngeal anesthesia.
  • Maximum blood Lidocaine levels (0.37–3.28 µg/ml) were within the nontoxic range.
  • 100 patients preferred nebulizer anesthesia over conventional techniques.
  • Conclusions:

    • Ultrasonic nebulizer anesthesia is a safe and effective method for bronchoscopy.
    • This technique offers a patient-preferred alternative to conventional local anesthesia for bronchoscopy.
