    Context:

    • Prototheca species are achlorophyllous algae that can cause opportunistic infections in various hosts.
    • Fruit bats are known reservoirs for diverse pathogens, but Prototheca infections are rarely documented in these animals.

    • To report a novel case of Prototheca infection in a fruit bat.
    • To describe the pathological findings associated with this infection.

    Summary:

    • Histopathological examination revealed Prototheca organisms, consistent with Prototheca wickerhamii, in a fruit bat.
    • The infection resulted in severe granulomatous lymphadenitis, splenitis, and meningoencephalitis.
    • Focal granulomatous lesions were also identified in the myocardium, skeletal muscles, and kidneys.

    Impact:

    • This case expands the known host range for Prototheca infections.
    • It highlights the potential for Prototheca to cause significant systemic disease in chiropterans.
    • Further investigation into Prototheca epidemiology in bats is warranted.
