Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Colorectal Surgery

Context:

  • Internal hemorrhoids affect a significant patient population.
  • Current treatment options vary in efficacy and invasiveness.
  • Endoscopic procedures are increasingly utilized for anorectal conditions.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of endoscopic hemorrhoidal ligation (EHL) for treating internal hemorrhoids.
  • To assess patient outcomes and complication rates associated with EHL in an outpatient setting.

Summary:

  • 40 patients with internal hemorrhoids underwent outpatient endoscopic hemorrhoidal ligation (EHL).
  • Post-procedure, 7 patients experienced mild, manageable pain, resolving within a week.
  • No postoperative bleeding occurred. Twenty-nine patients achieved 'good' results (no symptoms), and 11 had 'fair' results (improvement).

Impact:

  • EHL is a safe, painless, and effective outpatient treatment for internal hemorrhoids.
  • The procedure can be performed simultaneously with colonoscopy when operative indications are present.
  • EHL offers a minimally invasive option with high patient satisfaction and good-to-fair outcomes.
