Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the jugular foramen: case report

This case report details a rare peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) in the jugular foramen. The aggressive tumor showed rapid progression and poor prognosis despite surgical intervention.

Background:
- Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a rare malignancy typically affecting children and young adults in the limbs.
- Jugular foramen tumors are uncommon, with diverse origins and clinical presentations.
Observation:
- A 23-year-old male presented with progressive hoarseness and dysphagia.
- Neuroradiological imaging revealed a tumor at the jugular foramen.
- The patient underwent partial tumor resection via a far lateral suboccipital craniotomy.
Findings:
- Postoperative deterioration in consciousness occurred.
- Magnetic resonance imaging showed rapid expansion of residual tumor into the posterior fossa.
- Pathological diagnosis confirmed pPNET via hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemical staining.
Implications:
- This is the first reported case of pPNET originating at the jugular foramen.
- The rapid progression and poor outcome highlight the aggressive nature of this rare tumor in this location.
- Further research into the management of jugular foramen pPNET is warranted.
