Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Pharmacology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Azithromycin (Zithromax) is a macrolide antibiotic derived from erythromycin.
  • It is generally considered safe, with uncommon hepatic side effects.
  • Potential side effects include jaundice, fever, and right upper quadrant pain.

Observation:

  • A patient developed cholestatic hepatitis.
  • The condition was linked to azithromycin use.
  • Liver histology showed typical changes consistent with drug-induced injury.

Findings:

  • Azithromycin-induced cholestatic hepatitis was diagnosed.
  • The liver injury resolved upon discontinuation of azithromycin.
  • Other causes of liver disease were ruled out.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for azithromycin-induced liver injury.
  • Early recognition and drug cessation can lead to resolution.
  • This adverse effect is important given the widespread prescription of azithromycin.
