Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychopathology

Background:

  • Manic defense is a proposed psychological defense mechanism.
  • Understanding response styles to depression is crucial for psychopathology research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if manic defense involves specific coping strategies for depression, such as distraction and engaging in dangerous activities.
  • To examine the relationship between hypomanic traits and response styles to depression.

Main Methods:

  • A correlational study design was employed.
  • Undergraduate participants completed the Hypomanic Personality Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and a Response Styles Questionnaire.
  • Hypomanic traits and depression levels were assessed.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Depression showed a strong association with rumination.
  • Hypomanic traits correlated with rumination, distraction, and engaging in dangerous activities.
  • Only 17% of the variance in hypomania scores was explained, indicating other contributing factors.

Conclusions:

  • Hypomania, and potentially mania, may arise from ineffective coping mechanisms for negative emotions.
  • Response styles play a significant role in the manifestation of hypomanic traits.
