Background:

  • Abdominoplasty is a common cosmetic procedure to improve abdominal contour.
  • Rectus diastasis, or separation of the abdominal muscles, is often corrected during abdominoplasty.
  • The long-term effects of pregnancy on the abdominal wall after abdominoplasty are not fully understood.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 25-year-old female who underwent abdominoplasty and subsequently had an uneventful pregnancy.
  • Post-pregnancy evaluation, including clinical examination and CT scan, showed no recurrence of rectus diastasis.
  • Minimal excess skin and no significant weight gain were noted 15 months postpartum.

Findings:

  • The corrected rectus diastasis area remained intact despite fetal growth during pregnancy.
  • The myoaponeurotic layer of the abdominal wall demonstrated elasticity, accommodating the pregnancy.
  • No palpable or visible recurrence of rectus diastasis was detected on examination or CT scan.

Implications:

  • Rectus diastasis repair during abdominoplasty may provide durable results, resisting pregnancy-induced abdominal wall changes.
  • This case suggests that abdominoplasty with rectus diastasis correction could be a highly effective procedure for maintaining abdominal integrity.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm these findings across a larger patient population.
