Summary

Adding fluvoxamine to risperidone did not improve residual symptoms in chronic schizophrenia patients. This open trial found no significant changes in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) or extrapyramidal effects.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Chronic schizophrenia often presents residual positive and negative symptoms despite treatment.
  • Risperidone is a common antipsychotic, but treatment response can be incomplete.
  • Augmentation strategies are explored to enhance efficacy in treatment-resistant cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of adding fluvoxamine to risperidone.
  • To assess the impact on residual positive and negative symptoms in chronic schizophrenia.
  • To determine if fluvoxamine augmentation improves outcomes in patients with incomplete risperidone response.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label trial involving 30 patients with chronic schizophrenia.
  • Fluvoxamine was added to existing risperidone treatment for 12 weeks.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Symptom severity was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Simpson-Angus (S-A) scale at multiple time points.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant improvements were observed in PANSS positive, negative, or general psychopathology scores.
    • No significant changes were noted in Simpson-Angus extrapyramidal effects scores.
    • Fluvoxamine augmentation did not demonstrate added benefit over risperidone monotherapy in this cohort.

    Conclusions:

    • Fluvoxamine appears ineffective as an augmentation agent for risperidone in treating residual symptoms of chronic schizophrenia.
    • Further investigation through controlled trials is warranted to confirm these findings.
    • The combination did not lead to increased extrapyramidal side effects during the study period.
