Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders.
  • Gallstone formation (cholelithiasis) is a known complication in certain hematologic conditions.
  • The incidence of gallstones in thalassemia is generally lower than in sickle cell anemia or hereditary spherocytosis.

Observation:

  • A 24-year-old female patient with thalassemia major presented with gallstones.
  • Adequate blood transfusions can reduce gallstone incidence in thalassemia to as low as 2%.

Findings:

  • Cholelithiasis is infrequently reported in patients with thalassemia.
  • This case adds to the limited literature on gallstones in thalassemia.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of monitoring for gallstones in thalassemia patients, even if incidence is low.
  • Further research may be needed to understand the specific risk factors and management of gallstones in thalassemia.
  • This case underscores the need for comprehensive patient care in managing complex hematologic conditions.
