Summary

Temporary centrifugal mechanical assist devices can salvage patients with postcardiotomy heart failure. This study shows 52.4% hospital survival, with survivors enjoying reasonable long-term longevity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a single surgeon's experience using centrifugal pumps as ventricular assist devices.
  • To assess outcomes for patients with severe hemodynamic compromise after open heart surgery.
  • To compare results with other mechanical assist devices.

Main Methods:

  • A single surgeon utilized 35 Sarns Centrifugal Pumps as ventricular assist devices in 21 patients between 1986 and 2001.
