    Area of Science:

    • Surgical pathology
    • Abdominal surgery
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of bone in extraskeletal soft tissues.
    • Abdominal wall HO, particularly in scars, is an uncommon clinical finding.
    • Understanding the etiology and clinical presentation of abdominal scar HO is important for diagnosis and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical characteristics and management of patients with heterotopic ossification in abdominal scars.
    • To review the indications for surgical intervention in these cases.
    • To discuss potential mechanisms of HO formation in abdominal scars.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective case series of twelve patients diagnosed with heterotopic ossification in abdominal scars.
    • Review of clinical presentations, diagnostic methods (including roentgenology), and treatment outcomes.
    • Analysis of reasons for surgical excision.

    Main Results:

    • Twelve patients with abdominal scar HO were identified.
    • Seven patients underwent operative excision for local symptoms, suspected malignancy, or further abdominal procedures.
    • Five cases were diagnosed via radiological imaging.

    Conclusions:

    • Heterotopic ossification in abdominal scars can present with varied clinical scenarios requiring surgical consideration.
    • Both implantation and metaplasia theories are plausible mechanisms for the formation of these lesions.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the exact pathogenesis of abdominal HO.
