    Summary

This study investigated chronic urticaria in 111 patients, finding that 22 with low iron levels improved after iron treatment. Further research is needed to explore other potential systemic causes for persistent hives.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Hematology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Context:

    • A 1974 study at Saint Paul's Hospital (Autonomous University of Barcelona) examined 111 patients with urticaria.
    • 77 patients presented with chronic urticaria, a significant subset of the total cohort.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the potential link between low blood iron levels and chronic urticaria.
    • To explore the efficacy of iron supplementation in treating chronic urticaria.
    • To examine the relationship between blood levels of salicylates, trypsin, and alpha-chymotrypsin and urticaria persistence.

    Summary:

    • Among 77 chronic urticaria patients, 22 exhibited low blood iron values.
    • Iron treatment led to improvement or resolution of urticaria in some patients with low iron.
    • The study also monitored salicylate, trypsin, and alpha-chymotrypsin levels in 14 patients to assess their role in persistent urticaria.

    Impact:

    • Highlights a potential therapeutic target (iron deficiency) for a subset of chronic urticaria patients.
    • Suggests the need for further investigation into the multifactorial causes of chronic urticaria.
    • Provides a basis for future research into the biochemical markers associated with urticaria chronicity.
