Assessment of quality of life in palliative care
1Palliative Care and Oncology, Faculty of Health and Community Care, University of Central England in Birmingham, England.
Abstract:
Assessment of palliative care and the evolution of interest in quality of life (QoL) measures are inextricably linked. Several validated QoL measures have become accepted for use, so it is increasingly unlikely that a 'gold-standard' measure will emerge. This range of current measures is potentially valuable because it provides the user with a degree of choice. However, such a range also brings to light methodological uncertainties. The aim of this article is not to identify the best measures, but to explore some of the factors that should guide that choice.
