Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the representation of diagnostic radiology on guideline writing committees.
  • To determine the extent of radiologist involvement in guideline development and review.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guidelines for radiologist authorship and review.
  • Examination of global stroke management guidelines to ascertain radiologist author representation.

Main Results:

  • Only 23% of SIGN guidelines had a radiologist author, and 11% had a radiologist reviewer.
  • Independent review indicated that 76% of guidelines should have included a radiologist author and 91% a reviewer.
  • Radiologists comprised only 1% of authors in global stroke management guidelines, with representation limited to imaging-specific guidelines.

Conclusions:

  • Diagnostic radiology is significantly underrepresented on guideline writing committees.
  • There is a substantial gap between the need for radiological input and its actual inclusion in guidelines.
  • Increased participation of radiologists in guideline production is recommended.
