Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Immunology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Warts are common skin infections with no universally effective treatments.
  • Cimetidine, an H2-receptor antagonist, possesses immunomodulatory properties that have prompted its investigation for wart treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of cimetidine in treating multiple and recalcitrant warts in children.
  • To compare cimetidine treatment against a placebo in a pediatric population.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 60 children with multiple and recalcitrant warts.
  • Participants were randomized to receive either cimetidine (25-30 mg/kg daily) or placebo for 2 months.
  • Outcomes were assessed at the end of the therapy period.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The cure rate for warts was 60% in the cimetidine group (10 patients examined) versus 33% in the placebo group (9 patients examined).
  • Despite a higher observed cure rate, the study had a small sample size for final analysis.

Conclusions:

  • Cimetidine may be a potential therapeutic option for difficult-to-treat warts in children.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm its efficacy and determine optimal use in pediatric wart management.
