Zygote transfer and embryo transfer show similar pregnancy and implantation rates in fertility treatments. This study suggests zygote transfer is a viable alternative to traditional embryo transfer methods.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Embryology
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Background:

  • Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) aim to improve pregnancy outcomes.
  • Embryo transfer is a crucial step in IVF cycles.
  • Evaluating alternative transfer stages, like zygotes, may optimize success rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficiency of human zygote transfer versus human day 2 or 3 embryo transfer.
  • To assess pregnancy and implantation rates for each transfer method.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, randomized, multicenter trial involving 386 patients.
  • Participants were randomized to either zygote transfer or embryo transfer groups.
  • Standardized protocols were used for oocyte retrieval and laboratory procedures.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Pregnancy rates were 36.5% for zygote transfer and 42% for embryo transfer.
  • Implantation rates were equivalent, at 17%, in both groups.
  • No significant general difference was observed between the two transfer methods.

Conclusions:

  • Zygote transfer demonstrated comparable outcomes to embryo transfer.
  • Zygote transfer is presented as a valid alternative to embryo transfer in IVF.
  • Further research may explore specific patient populations benefiting from zygote transfer.
