Summary

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) show strong correlation with inflammation markers in hypersensitivity vasculitis (HSV). These cytokines may offer new avenues for managing HSV.

Background:

  • Hypersensitivity vasculitis (HSV) is a secondary vasculitis triggered by exogenous substances.
  • The role of specific cytokines in HSV pathophysiology remains under-investigated due to the rarity of vasculitides.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the involvement of specific cytokines in the pathophysiological processes of hypersensitivity vasculitis.
  • To compare serum cytokine levels in active and inactive HSV patients with healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) were measured in 20 HSV patients (12 active, 8 inactive) and 20 healthy controls.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for cytokine analysis, alongside erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and fibrinogen measurements.

  • Active and inactive HSV patients showed significantly higher ESR, CRP, and fibrinogen levels compared to healthy controls, with active cases exhibiting higher levels than inactive ones.

  • A strong positive correlation was observed between ESR, CRP, and fibrinogen levels with serum TNFalpha and IL-10, but not with IL-6 or sIL-2R.

  • These findings suggest that TNFalpha and IL-10 could serve as valuable biomarkers for assessing HSV activity.
  • Investigating these cytokines may pave the way for novel therapeutic strategies for hypersensitivity vasculitis.
