Summary

Reduced pulmonary function, measured by Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), is linked to higher levels of inflammation-sensitive proteins. This association partially explains the increased risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with low FVC.

Background:

  • The link between reduced pulmonary function and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is not fully understood.
  • Inflammation is a potential mediating factor in this relationship.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pulmonary function and inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins.
  • To determine if these proteins mediate the increased cardiovascular risk observed in individuals with low pulmonary function.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 5064 healthy men aged 28-61 years.
  • Measured Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and plasma levels of specific inflammation-sensitive proteins.
  • Monitored all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and myocardial infarction incidence over 18.4 years.

Main Results:

  • Low FVC was associated with higher plasma levels of inflammation-sensitive proteins.
  • Low FVC independently predicted increased risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death.
  • Adjusting for protein levels partially attenuated the increased cardiovascular risk associated with low FVC, explaining 10-25% of the excess risk.

Conclusions:

  • Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) is inversely associated with plasma levels of inflammation-sensitive proteins.
  • Inflammation-sensitive proteins partially mediate the elevated cardiovascular risk linked to reduced pulmonary function.
  • This relationship does not fully account for the observed increase in cardiovascular risk among men with low FVC.
