Osteogenesis imperfecta patients with valvular disease can undergo heart surgery. This case series shows successful surgical outcomes despite significant intraoperative hemorrhage, challenging high mortality rates.

Background:

  • Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility and fractures.
  • Patients with OI have an increased prevalence of valvular heart disease, posing surgical risks.
  • The reported surgery-related mortality rate for OI patients undergoing valvular surgery is high, approximately 30%.

Observation:

  • This study reports on two male patients with osteogenesis imperfecta who underwent cardiac valve surgery.
  • Patient 1, aged 31, had aortic valve insufficiency and underwent aortic valve replacement.
  • Patient 2, aged 59, was diagnosed with OI during admission for mitral valve insufficiency, undergoing mitral valve plasty.

Findings:

  • Both patients experienced significant intraoperative hemorrhage during their respective procedures.
