Background:

  • Modern female pilots operate high-performance aircraft, enduring significant G-force.
  • Limited data exists on female pilots' tolerance to high acceleration environments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the acceleration tolerance of female pilot trainees.
  • To compare female pilot tolerance to established male pilot data.

Main Methods:

  • 17 female pilot trainees underwent testing using the High G and Disorientation Demonstrator.
  • Included rapid onset runs (RORs) and gradual onset runs (GORs) to determine tolerance limits.
  • Tolerance defined by peripheral light loss.

Main Results:

  • Mean ROR tolerance was 4.2 G; mean GOR tolerance was 5.2 G.
  • Three subjects experienced nausea during GOR; two reported breast discomfort above 3.5 G.

Conclusions:

  • Female pilot trainees demonstrated acceleration tolerance comparable to male pilots.
  • Findings suggest similar physiological responses to G-force in both sexes.
