This study predicts unerupted canine and premolar sizes using lower incisor widths in an Eastern Sicilian population. Findings suggest existing prediction methods may overestimate tooth dimensions for this group.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop regression equations for predicting the mesio-distal crown diameters of unerupted canines, first, and second premolars using lower incisor widths in an Eastern Sicilian sample.
  • To compare these new predictions with established methods by Tanaka & Johnston, Moyers, and Ballard & Wylie.

  • A sample of 150 dental casts (82 female, 68 male) from the University of Catania's Orthodontic School was analyzed.
  • Mesio-distal widths of canines, first and second premolars, and lower incisors were measured using a bow compass and digital caliper.
